Community police, catalysts of safe neighbourhoods
The city police have now invited applications for volunteers
BENGALURU: From rescuing a one-and-a-half-year-old child from the clutches of traffickers in Madivala to helping the police nab fleeing thieves last month in HSR Layout, the ASMs (Area Suraksha Mitras), volunteers of community policing have become an integral part of the city police.
After tasting success in its pilot project, launched two years ago, the city police have now expanded it to seven more police stations. As part of pilot project, in collaboration with Janaagraha, it had in June 20, 2013 introduced community policing in Ashokanagar, Banaswadi, J.P. Nagar, Jnanabharathi, Madivala and Rajagopalnagar police station limits. Now, it will be introduced in HAL, Kamakshipalya, Mico Layout, K.R. Puram, Ramamurthy Nagar, Tilaknagar and Kodigehalli police station limits.
The Janaagraha had recently conducted a community police induction programme for police officers attached to the seven police stations, which got over on July 10. The city police have now invited applications for volunteers. Kodigehalli police station received more than 36 applications for volunteers and their verification is in progress. Mobilisation of ASMs is also underway in other police stations.
For those selected as ASMs the police will conduct various activities such as awareness programmes in schools, colleges, banks, residential areas, door-to-door awareness campaign and streetplays to spread awareness on prevention of crime and neighbourhood safety. Since its inception, more than one lakh citizens have been educated on issues related to citizen’s safety.
