Bengaluru students devise automatic ‘emergency exit’ for buses

According to this new system, all the windows inside the AC buses will function as emergency exits. According to the student researchers, generally at the time of accidents, either the emergency exits don’t work or due to the sudden rush of passengers to the exit, no one is able to use them properly. One solution for this problem is to provide a larger number of emergency exits in the buses to ensure that every passenger can come out of the bus safely and quickly. Another challenge is making these windows automatic, as passengers often find it difficult to open the emergency exits.

The four students of the Gopalan College of Engineering are: Jagadish, Bharath, Jeevan and Karthik. They were touched and troubled by the Volvo bus accidents and took up the challenge to make Volvo travel safer, as part of their project work. The formula they came up with: Sensors would be placed across the bus. If the bus catches fire, the sensors detect and activate the linear actuator.

This linear actuator releases pressure and the tube will be deflated. Deflating the tube, increases clearance and the window glasses will slide d own and the passengers can escape from the vehicle. After in-depth research and study, they have developed this new system where all the windows inside a Volvo can be opened manually as well as automatically in an emergency. If an accident takes place, students are confident that through their system, maximum passenger lives can be saved. According to the students, the bus windows will be airtight in normal conditions. But in this new system, these windows will slide in case of an emergency. The windows will also be free from wear and tear.
