Scots rule with Scotch, fail with wine
They may rule when it comes to Scotch but the Scots have had considerably less success with their wine. A few vineyards in Scotland have just about started producing wine — citing global warming as bringing about climes suitable enough to cultivate grapes in their part of the country. However, the temperatures are still nowhere near high enough to produce good quality grapes, so it is small wonder then that the first Scottish wines have been scoffed at by sommeliers. In fact, they’ve gone on to call these wines “undrinkable”.
Scottish winemakers believe that as summer temperatures soar, they will be able to better the quality of their wine, and most have been cultivating a type of hybrid white grape called “Solaris”. But it seems their calculations — and their hope to be recognised as a fine wine-making region — will take a very long time to bear fruit. But at least they’ve still got Scotch, right?
