Why spend taxpayer’s money on fighting criminal defamation cases filed by public servants: SC

In the case of individuals, the loss of reputation is intangible

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned the Tamil Nadu, Delhi and other states as to why tax payers money be spent on fighting criminal defamation cases filed by the chief minister, ministers and other public servants.

A bench of justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C. Pant, hearing a batch of petitions challenging IPC Sections 499 and 500 relating to criminal defamation pointed out as to why the State should defend a public servant accused of defamation.

In the case of individuals, the loss of reputation is intangible. Reputation is damaged in a split second — the time take for a message posted on social sites to travel across the globe,” Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said.
