University of Mysuru to turn 100 in 2016
Mysuru: The giants of academics and literature will be there and so will be top politicos of the state and country when President Pranab Mukherjee launches the centenary celebrations of University of Mysuru on July 27.
Set up by Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV in 1916, the varsity has nurtured scores of eminent personalities like former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan while litterateur Dr Kuvempu was one of its illustrious mentors. The celebrations will be witnessed by over 10,000 people at the amphitheatre at Manasa Gangothri.
Vice Chancellor of UoM, Prof K.S. Rangappa told reporters that three centenary awards in the names of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Dr S. Radhakrishnan and Dr C.N. R. Rao will be instituted on the occasion. Seven living vice chancellors of the university including himself, Prof Javaregowda, Dr P. Selvie Das, Prof M Madaiah, Prof S. N. Hegde, Prof Shashidhar Prasad and Prof V. G. Talwar will be honoured.
The oldest alumni and the father of the modern Kannada lexicon, G. Venkatasubbayya, a centenarian will also be honoured.
As many as four Nobel laureates including Mohammed Yusuf, Venkatraman Radhakrishnan and Prof Richard J. Roberts will deliver centenary lectures during the year.
A book on University of Mysuru, by former VC B. Sheik Ali, titled ‘Era of Enlightenment’ will be released.
“Our vision is to take the university to the global level and make it an international level academic centre. We will be presenting a memorandum for Central university status to the President on the occasion,” he said.
