Telugu Desam in dilemma on ‘sting’

Party backs BJP against Rawat, opposes TS on Revanth

Hyderabad: The BJP releasing a CD of the sting operation in which the personal secretary of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat is allegedly seen asking for bribes for effecting changes in the liquor policy has put the Telugu Desam in a dilemma.

On one hand the party has been blaming the TRS government for its sting operation against TD MLA Revanth Reddy, and on the other hand, it is supporting a similar operation in another state since it is a part of the BJP-led coalition in the Centre.

Mr Vinod, TRS MP from Karimnagar and deputy floor leader in Lok Sabha, heavily criticised the TD for its “double standards” on Thursday. “The party has no moral right to argue in favour of Revanth Reddy as the same party is supporting the BJP’s act. This is because both BJP and TD are allies in the Centre and in AP. If TD has any respect for democratic values, it can follow the same policy — whether it is supporting or opposing,” he said.

The TD on the other hand has been maintaining a strategic silence on the sting operation. However, party sources maintained that there was a difference between the two cases.

While in Telangana, the sting was carried out by the government and an arm of the government (ACB), in Uttarakhand, it was done by a private agency.

But when asked about the alleged involvement of Chief Ministers in both the cases, TD sources evaded the query saying that Mr Chandrababu Naidu’s involvement was not yet proved in Mr Revanth Reddy’s case.
