Anti-Smuggling Task Force personnel along with forest staff seized 28 red sander logs
Tirupati: Anti-Smuggling Task Force personnel along with forest staff seized 28 red sander logs along with a Toyota vehicle transporting them after a hot chase at Pachikapallam in Vedurukuppam mandal, 25 km from here on Thursday. The chase ended after the Toyota overturned after the driver of the vehicle lost control because of over speed.
According to Vedurukuppam police, the vehicle carrying 28 red sander logs was chased by an Anti-Smuggling Task Force along with forest staff from Ramachandrapuram check post. The Toyota vehicle was proceeding to Chennai from Tirupati with precious timber logs.
Following a tip off, the forest and task force chased the vehicle to seize the timber. In an attempt to give slip to the Task Force, the driver of the vehicle increased the speed resulting in loss of control over the vehicle which overturned near Pachikapallam fields.
The driver of the vehicle managed to escape from the scene immediately after the accident. The Task Force and forest staff seized the logs along with vehicle and shifted them to forest divisional office near Kapila Teertham.
The forest officials said the logs are weighing about 680 kg and worth around Rs 16 lakh. They said the smuggling of precious timber was contained considerably except few rare incidents despite the implementation of measures to contain smuggling are being done strictly. The Vedurukuppam police registered a case as the incident occurred in their jurisdiction.
