Court appoints Sagayam as special officer to visit mines in Madurai district

Chennai: The Madras high court has granted six weeks to IAS officer U. Sagayam, appointed as a special officer/legal commissioner by the court to visit and inspect mines in Madurai district, to submit his report. Acceding to the request made by V. Suresh, counsel for Sagayam to grant six weeks, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam posted to September 15, further hearing of the case.

Closing the interlocutory application filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy, which sought a direction to appoint Sagayam to inspect the illegal mining, the bench had on September 21, 2014, appointed Sagayam to probe the matter and submit a report. In November 2014, the bench clarified that his probe would be restricted only to Madurai district. In March this year, the bench extended the deadline by eight more weeks for filing the report and thereafter it was further extended.

On Thursday, when the case came up for hearing, Suresh filed a memo seeking six weeks time to file report.The bench said it was stated on behalf of the court commissioner that all the materials have been received and the process of wring report was commenced, for which six weeks time sought. Six weeks time was granted, the bench added.
