Karnataka: Six more farmers commit suicide

The wave of suicides by farmers showed no signs of subsiding

MYSURU: The wave of suicides by farmers showed no signs of subsiding with six farmers—two in Mandya district, two in Haveri district, and one each in Bidar and Kalaburagi districts—ending their lives on Thursday.

In Sollepura, a village in KR Pet taluk, Paape Gowda, 60, a sugarcane farmer consumed poison on his farm because he could not repay a loan of Rs two lakhs, according to a complaint filed by his son, Ananda. He went missing from his home last night, but was found in a bad condition on his field later on. He was rushed to two government hospitals but succumbed later on.

In Bidira Hosalli, Maddur taluk, Kempe Gowda, 38, committed suicide because he too could not repay his loan of Rs five lakhs, having suffered loss of sugarcane and mulberry crops. Meanwhile, in Haveri district, Dilleppa, 50, and Manjappa Bheemappanavar, 35, taking the number of suicides by farmers in this district to 14 during the last two months.

Two more farmers committed suicide—one in Ballur, a village in Aurad taluk, Bidar district, and another in Badanihal thanda in Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district. With Santoshkumar Chillale’s death, the number of suicides in Bidar district has increased to six. In an odd case, Jeevulu Gopu Rathod, 50, ended his life because he failed to get a loan from a local bank at a time he had already borrowed '4.5 lakhs from private money lenders.

In another incident in Sarsamba, a village in Aland taluk, Balappa Waghe, 45, tried to commit suicide because he too failed to get a loan from a cooperative body.
