Chennai city police to have metro rail police stations
Chennai: Chennai city police will soon be starting metro rail police stations exclusively to handle crime and law and order situations on the Chennai metro rail stretch.“It will function in tandem with the other planned exclusive force that will be handling safety and security of the metro rail stations,” a source said. As of now, local police stations were asked to keep an eye on metro rail stations as well.
By the completion of the entire project, the Chennai metro rail will be having as many as 43 stations across the city and will be carrying thousands of people every day. Like any other city the local police will be handling the crime and law and order situations while the security and safety will be handled by other dedicated agency. In Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, there are special wings – either from the central force or from the state force – to handle other aspects of policing.
“You need an agency to look at exclusive areas like access control, anti-terror operation, anti-sabotage checks, protection of metro rail properties and CCTV monitoring. City police will not have resources and manpower to handle such responsibilities,” an officer said.
The city police, through its metro rail police stations, will be involved in routine crime prevention, crime detection and other possible law and order situation, he said. The Chennai city police may have five to six metro rail police stations once the entire project is completed. Each metro rail police station will have six or seven metro rail station under its control.
