Nayan has a nose for good scripts: Jayam Ravi
The actor speaks to DC about Sakalakalavallavan
Jayam Ravi who bounced back with the rom-com Romeo Juliet is awaiting two releases Sakalakalavallavan and Thani Oruvan in the coming months and has started shooting for two other projects. The actor speaks to DC about Sakalakalavallavan which is a yesteryear blockbuster movie of Kamal Haasan, on his co-stars Trisha and Nayanthara, and the magical combination with his brother Jayam Raja.
On Sakalakalavallavan: It was initially titled Appatakkar. With the new title Sakalakalavallavan, I think my onus of ensuring that it would be on par with Kamal sir’s film in terms of entertainment has doubled. When the makers wanted to change the working title, they felt Sakala… was apt and approached AVM Saravanan who owned the original title. He gave the title without hesitating. The movie is an out-and-out comedy caper and I hope it will satisfy the masses.
Teaming up with Trisha for the third time: We are good friends rather than co-stars. She doesn’t throw her attitude around on sets, and entertains us a lot by cracking jokes. When we did Unakkum Enakkum in 2006, we couldn’t think of anyone else other than Trisha for that role. Similarly, in this film, I play a village guy and we wanted a city-bred girl as one of my heroines. She fits the bill perfectly.
On director Suraj: Suraj sir has proved to be the master of comedy flicks. His humour is amazing and he is capable of bringing out the witty side of every actor. He utters a single dialogue in five different variations and you know each one will perfectly fit the scene. The movie has an ensemble cast including Anjali, Soori and Prabhu sir and Suraj’s script has enough scope for everyone in the film.
Soori, the next ‘comedy superstar’: Soori is like my brother. I know him from Deepavali days. His growth is remarkable. In the film, we are always at loggerheads. I’m sure that the entire theatre will roar whenever he appears on screen. It is not only his talent but also his good nature that is taking him to great levels. He will be the next big thing in comedy.
The lull period: I was stuck with Bhoologam for a long. I had a different look and hence did not meet the media then. It was a challenging character and all of us who worked in it have given our heart and soul to it. Unfortunately, a good movie like Bhoologam is yet to see the light of the day. But I am confident that it would make it one day.
His bro Jayam Raja: Jayam Raja’s films have turned out to be hits. The only reason I can attribute it to, is that he has the knack of picking up the right scripts. He is great at it and that is his success mantra. Though they were all remakes, he improvises to suit the sensitivity of the local audiences. And we are joining hands once again for Thani Oruvan which is Raja’s first straight script. He has worked very hard for the film and it imparts a message ‘The Power of One’.
Playing a cop in Thani Oruvan for the first time: Yes, every actor is passionate about sporting khaki atleast in one of his films. Though I play a cop, he is not the routine officer. He is from Organized Crime Intelligent Unit. It’s a new kind of character. I took references from the book, websites which deals with similar cases. Also I took weapons training apart from what my director asked me to do. Nayanthara is a professional actress: We both came to the industry around the same time. And it is the first time we are working as a pair. She has a nose for good scripts and knows well what suits her. She is very professional and has a practical approach.
