Post offices to have sticker stamps soon that could be pasted onto the covers directly

Chennai: Soon one may not find post office walls with glue stains as India Post has come up with sticker stamps that could be pasted onto the covers directly. This is part of the Centre’s Swachh Bharat campaign. Mr S.C.Barmma, Postmaster General (mails & business development), said the sticker stamp will be part of “My stamp” category and would be extended to other categories in the coming days.

“The stamps with sticker would help us keep the post office clean and thereby enhance the image of the office,” he said. Pointing out that India Post released the maximum number of stamps every year, the Postmaster General said India printed 50 new stamps on various subjects every year whereas Australia produced 18 stamps a year.

He also said that Business Post Centre at the Anna Road post office here generated revenue to the tune of Rs 10 crore a year, followed by Nandanam and Park Town. “These centres handle only bulk posts, parcels and letters from corporate customers. When the economy is doing well you have more number of communication from these companies, which reflects in postal business development,” he said.

Listing out 27 clients, Mr Barmma said banks like State Bank of India, HDFC, Axis Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank, Southern Railways, Police department, TNPSC and Tamil Nadu Forest Service send letters from Chennai city and generate a revenue of '1 crore per year to the postal department.
