Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon appeals to SC again to stop his execution

New Delhi: 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon has once again moved the Supreme Court to stay his hanging.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court cancelled Memon’s curative plea.

He has now filed a petition alleging that the death penalty granted to him is illegal.

Yakub Memon, in his curative petition, sought a direction for commutation of his death sentence into life sentence as certain arguments were not considered by the court and there was an error apparent in the original judgement and the order rejecting his review plea.

A chartered accountant by profession, Memon’s lawyer has said that a proper procedure was not followed while issuing the warrant.

According to him, the order for his hanging was decided, even when he had not filed the curative petition in the top court.

In his plea, Memon has also claimed that he has been suffering from schizophrenia since 1996.

Memon was arrested on August 6, 1994, when he arrived from Kathmandu. He has been behind bars for over 20 years now.

Over 250 people were killed in the serial blasts that rocked India’s financial capital in 1993.
