Centre plans to celebrate 1965 war triumph

Wreath-laying at Amar Jawan Jyoti on Aug. 28
New Delhi: Despite the spirit of Indo-Pakistani bonhomie at Ufa, Russia, after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif, the Modi government is going all out to commemorate the golden jubilee of the “intense” 1965 war with Pakistan that led to the capture of Hajipir Pass in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The threat posed by Indian armed forces to the famous city of Lahore still inspires and motivates Indian citizens. This victory was possible due to the supreme sacrifice of nearly 3,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen. The government has taken a decision to celebrate the golden jubilee of this great victory at a national level with zeal and enthusiasm, which will be a befitting tribute to gallant heroes of the war,” the Army said in a note circulated recently within the government.
“The Indo-Pak war of 1965 is one of the most intense wars in the annals of military history. The operations saw some of the fiercest engagements on land, air and seas since World War II. At the end of the war, a decisive defeat was inflicted on Pakistan wherein the Indian armed forces captured 3,900 sq km of Pakistani territory. The highlight of the war was the capture of Hajipir Pass in Jammu and Kashmir and the creation of Patton Nagar in the Khemkaran sector of Punjab,” the Army said.
A series of events have been planned from August 28 to September 22. There will be a wreath-laying ceremony at Amar Jawan Jyoti on August 28, the anniversary of the Hajipur Pass capture, while a tri-services seminar will be held on September 1-2.
A “commemorative exhibition” is planned from September 15 to 19, that may be opened by Prime Minister Modi. A “musical evening” is planned on September 21, while Mr Modi will lay a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti the next day. Also on September 22, a “veterans’ tea” will be hosted by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
