Aju Varghese’s new avatars
Independent character roles are in store for Aju Varghese in Kohinoor and Kunjiramayanam
For Aju Varghese, who created a huge fan following with the comic side kick roles he essayed in the past five years, this is a stage of transformation. The actor, who has marked his place in M’town with his natural acting in situational comedy scenes, is gearing up to come out in different avatars in his new outings. In the upcoming movies, apart from the start-to-end ‘friend role’ of the protagonist, the actor will be seen in independent character roles with comic overtones.
Aju, who was last seen as Faisal in the recently released KL 10 Patthu, is now all set to portray the role of a thief in Vinay Govind directed Kohinoor. “It is for the first time I am doing the role of a thief. That was the first factor which attracted me to this role. Another highlight of that story is that it is set in 1980s. I play Aandi Kunju who is an independent character and he is not always accompanying the protagonists,” says Aju.
While doing this sort of roles, the conception of the filmmakers and screen writers is the element which helps the actor to perform in the scene without any second thought. “In the case of Kohinoor, director Vinay and his writers Kamal and Salil had a clear idea about the role and the situation. Hence, their briefing was enough while doing the scene as there was no situation in which we had doubts to clarify,” says the actor who will be seen in the role of a tailor in debutant Basil Joseph’s Kunjiramayanam.
“In the case of Kunjiramayanam too, the role of a tailor is very new to me. I am portraying the character ‘Kuttan’, who is the only tailor in the village where the story takes place. A film with such a locale and ‘unrevealed time period’ is very new in my acting career. Kuttan is a tailor, who has his own identity. As he is the only tailor in that locality, he is a popular figure in that particular area,” sums up Aju.
