Eden Gardens to host World T20 final
New Delhi: As has often been the case, with the odd exception, the Eden Gardens in Kolkata will play host to yet another final of an ICC event, this time the title clash of the 2016 World T20, to be held in India from March 11 to April 3 2016, the BCCI said on Tuesday. “One of the semi-finals will be held in Mumbai. The other might be held in Delhi. In case the semi-final is not held in Delhi it will host a marquee match like India versus Pakistan. Dharamsala will host an India game against one of the qualifiers,” BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said while making the announcement.
Matches will be played at eight venues Bengaluru, Chennai, Dharamsala, Mohali, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi and Kolkata. The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai scene of India’s 2011 World Cup triumph and the Kotla here in the capital are in line to host the two semi-finals. Kolkata interestingly, missed out in the 2011 World Cup with a scheduled game being shifted away for incomplete work at the Eden.
“These venues will host matches subject to fulfilling the prescribed requirements of the ICC and BCCI while adhering to the statutory obligations that are mandatory for hosting an international match,” a BCCI statement said. Added Thakur: “The BCCI is extremely proud to host this prestigious event. All the venues identified have hosted many prestigious matches. With this announcement, we have begun our preparations in right earnest.
“We want this World Twenty20 to be a memorable experience for our participants and fans. I am confident that all the venues nominated will deliver a world class event.” The BCCI also set up a managing committee for the event. Board president Jagmohan Dalmiya will be chairman and Thakur the convenor.
