Young turks to eye Telangana BJP chief’s post

Party plans to contest GHMC elections
Hyderabad: Several youth leaders are eyeing Telangana BJP president’s post. With change in the state BJP leadership imminent and organisational elections to be completed by October, several young leaders, including legislators are in the race.
Prominent among those whose names are doing the rounds in BJP circles include BJP floor leader Dr K. Laxman, Uppal MLA, N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, newly elected MLC, Ramachander Rao, Ex-Nizamabad MLA, E. Laxminarayana to name a few. Some seniors too are throwing their hat in the ring, it is learnt.
“If I get a chance, I will certainly prove my mettle,” said Prabhakar when asked if he was in the race for party presidentship. Party sources say BJP national president Amit Shah is looking for a loyal, young and dynamic leader who can lead the party with his administrative and oratory skills besides being a stickler for party code and acceptable by other leaders and cadre.
Telangana being a new state and BJP being in the forefront of the TS movement, the BJP national leadership is keen to strengthen the party base from village to the state level.
The BJP has now set its eyes on the ensuing GHMC elections slated to be held in December or early next year. In the 120 member Assembly, BJP has five MLAs.
The national BJP leadership as well as senior state leaders are stumped at the party’s poor growth despite backing Telangana. They are now keen to rectify defects and ensure the party becomes the main Opposition to TRS.
While the BJP national leadership wants to ensure a consensus and unanimous state president and team, a whispering campaign has already begun in BJP for the state presidentship.
Normally, the state BJP president’s tenure is for two years, but due to the TS movement and bifurcation of the state, G. Kishan Reddy who is also an MLA has held the post for a longer period.
