Oommen Chandy seeks cabotage relaxation for Vizhinjam transshipment container project

This was the third letter written by Mr Chandy to the prime minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday seeking relaxation in the cabotage law for the Vizhinjam transshipment container project in view of the letter of award given to selected bidder Adani Ports and SEZ Limited.
This was the third letter written by Mr Chandy to the prime minister after the August 19, 2014 and February 26, 2015 letters.
Mr Chandy wanted the prime minister to provide relaxation in the cabotage law for the Vizhinjam port on the lines of the exemption being considered for ports on the East Coast in the proposed cabotage policy of the central government.
Chandy pointed out in the letter that the transshipment of containers which have India as their origin or destination currently takes place at foreign ports. “In pursuit of national interest, we are striving to shift these operations to the Indian soil by setting up the new port at Vizhinjam,” he wrote.
