Madras High Court grants bail to 118 in Ambur riot case
Chennai: The Madras high court has granted bail to 118 persons, arrested in connection with the riots in Ambur last month, following the death of a Muslim youth allegedly due to the custodial torture in connection with a missing woman case.
Granting them bail, Justice R. Subbiah said, “Taking note of the fact that the petitioners are inside the prison for more than 20 days, I am of the opinion that bail could be granted to them by imposing stringent conditions. Accordingly, the petitioners are directed to be released on bail on each of them executing a bond for Rs10,000 with one surety for a like sum to the satisfaction of judicial magistrate, Ambur and on further condition that the petitioners shall stay at Krishnagiri and report before the Krishnagiri town police station twice a day at 10.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. for a period of two weeks”.
The case revolves around a woman, Pavithra, who went missing in May. After her husband gave a complaint, the Pallikonda police picked up Shaheel Ahmed for inquiry. He had been allegedly kept in illegal custody and tortured, resulting in grievous injuries and later he died in a hospital.
Immediately, violence broke out in Ambur, in which more than 50 police personnel were injured and public properties were damaged. A total of 118 persons were arrested in connection with the incident.
