Appointments to teaching and non-teaching posts in aided schools and colleges

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that the state government would seek legal opinion again on providing reservation to the SC/ST communities in appointments to teaching and non-teaching posts in aided schools and colleges.
Mr Chandy told Mr V.S. Sunilkumar of the CPI in the Assembly on Tuesday that the legal opinion received by the government was that reservation cannot be insisted on for appointments in aided minority schools and colleges.
Therefore, the state government had taken a stand that implementing SC/ST reservation in appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff only in non-minority institutions was discriminatory.
However, Mr Sunilkumar claimed that as per UGC guidelines, aided colleges, centres and research centres receiving government grant, even if belonging to minorities, should give reservation.
Mr Chandy also said that the universities in the state had already amended their laws to implement reservation as per the Constitution. The reservation norms would be implemented by taking all teaching departments under them as a single unit.
Mr Sunilkumar had pointed out that recently the High court had given an order for ensuring SC/ST reservation in aided schools and colleges.
