Close shave for cabbie at airport
Chennai: A cab driver had a close shave when an iron rod fell on his vehicle while crossing a metro rail work site at the entrance of the city airport late Monday. Cab driver cum owner Balakrishnan (30) of Royapettah escaped unhurt. However, the bonnet of the car was damaged, incapacitating the vehicle after the fall. Balakrishnan was driving to the international terminal to receive a passenger around 10pm when an iron fastener said be weighing 25kg fell on the bonnet.
The accident also affected entry to the airport as the vehicles that tailed the broken down cab were stranded in the middle of the road. Balakrishnan lodged a complaint with the airport police. CMRL (Chennai metro rail limited) officials were understood to have agreed to repair the vehicle and compensate Balakrishnan till it gets done.
“I was lucky not to get injured. What if I had travelled by a bike or if an even bigger iron rod, like the one that fell on a software engineer near OTA, had fallen on the roof of my car?” said Balakrishnan. “I did not see any protective net under the overhead concrete structure. If there were one, I would not have suffered,” the cabbie told Deccan Chronicle.
