Broken fibre piece helps Bengaluru traffic police crack hit and run case

The accident took place near the Bhima Jewellers outlet on the Outer Ring Road

BENGALURU: A broken piece of fibre at an accident spot helped the traffic police crack a hit and run case and nab the culprit. The accident happened on June 3 when a vehicle hit a bike from rear and the pillion rider died on the spot, while the rider sustained injuries.

The accident took place near the Bhima Jewellers outlet on the Outer Ring Road in Banasawadi, around 12.30 am. The deceased, Anvitha, a 24-year-old B-Tech graduate, was going home along with her friend Siddharth. Anvitha hails from Hyderabad and had come to the city in search of a job.

The police had no clue about the driver and the vehicle except for piece of broken fibre piece at the spot. As the police started investigation, the devastated parents of Anvitha had announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh for those providing information about the driver.

“Police constable Srinivas, attached to Banasawadi traffic police station, took the investigation forward. As the broken fibre piece was used in Tavera cars, he got details of all the Tavera cars registered in that part of the area. After examining a large number of such cars, Srinivas landed at a travel agency to which the vehicle belonged. As the damage at the headlamp of the vehicle matched with the broken piece, he questioned the travel agency owner, who denied about any accident. Then, the headlamp section of the car and the broken piece was sent to analysis to the forensic science laboratory, where the experts confirmed both were of a same piece,” the police explained.

Based on this finding, they found out that the travel agency’s driver, Santosh Kumar, 34, was driving the vehicle when the incident took place. He was absconding and was nabbed on credible information. He confessed that he was driving the vehicle when it hit the bike, killing the woman, the police added.
