Heavy vehicles caused maximum accidents in the state highways and NHs

Hyderabad: National highways, state highways, and high speed corridors in Telangana kill at least 10 commuters every day. As per TS National Crime Records Bureau, as many as 3,737 people were killed in road mishaps in the past year.
Over speeding, poor illumination on the highways at places where they pass through villages and towns, negligence of the driver and faulty design of the roads are major causes, road safety experts say. Most of the accidents too place at night.
The National Crime Records Bureau data also revealed that 9,975 commuters were injured in the road mishaps. In 2014, a total of 9,150 accidents took place on these roads.
Heavy vehicles caused maximum accidents in the state highways and NHs. Pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and four-wheeler passengers were the victims in these mishaps. Speeding cars and four wheelers caused 99.5 per cent of the accidents on expressways like Outer Ring Road and PVNR expressway.
The number of accidents is fewer in Hyderabad as compared to other districts in the state, where most mishaps occurred in the villages.
It is impossible to illuminate thousands of kms in the national highways, but experts suggest that installing lights in the prone areas is possible.
Introducing traffic calming techniques, like speed breakers and sign boards on highways at selected places can also cut down on accidents.
“It’s important to have reflective tapes on trucks, tractors, and other heavy vehicles. It will help other drivers to understand the size of the vehicles on roads at night,” chairman of International Road Federation, India Chapter, N.K. Sinha told this reporter.
