VC mobile bill on syndicate agenda

BU meet expected to take up most contentious issues
Coimbatore: For the first time since G James Pitchai took over as the VC of the Bharathiar University, the syndicate of the university is scheduled to meet in Chennai on Tuesday to apparently discuss various allegations of irregularities in the university. The meeting is expected to take up most contentious issues such as the staggering Rs 9 lakh mobile phone bill of the Vice Chancellor that has been paid out of the university funds.
The university cleared his January 2015 bill to the tune of Rs 2,02,186 well within the stipulated February 16 deadline. The bill generated for the first week of February 2015 alone works out to Rs 1,12,462. The total bill generated till about June 2015 reportedly worked out to Rs 5,86,000. Last year, the university had cleared the VCs bill running to a tune of Rs 3,76,000.
The syndicate meeting is also expected to discuss the scam where several lakhs were supposedly spent on buying sarees for the daily wage workers in the university for Diwali last year. When the audit team had checked with Chennai Silks from where the university claimed to have purchased the sarees, the textile retailer had sent a notice to the university a few months back alleging use of bogus bills to show that the purchase had been done at Chennai Silks.
According to sources in the university, the audit team may also take up the misappropriation in buying utensils for the hostels, canteen and mess in the univerisity running to tune of Rs 2 crore from Selva Singh Store in Cross Cut road.
