Telangana still checking farmer deaths
Hyderabad: While the National Crime Records Bureau has placed Telangana at second place in the country for the number of farmers’ suicides in 2014, the state government is still in the process of conducting an inquiry to ascertain if the farmers committed suicide due to crop loss or debts or for other personal reasons.
The government has acknowledged only 98 suicides so far, against the NCRB’s tally of 898.
Compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to each affected family has been sanctioned only in Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s home district Medak so far. Hundreds of families in the other districts are still awaiting compensation for more than a year.
The government has asked collectors several times during the last year to complete inquiry and submit the reports. However, no progress has been made in this regard as collectors cite their “busy schedule” for not being able to focus on this issue.
