It also bans children below eight years
CHENNAI: Those frequenting swimming pools in Chennai can now expect a clean and safe ambience with the state government releasing new norms to be followed by those who own the facility. The government norms released last week by the municipal administration department also bans children below eight years if there is no adult supervision. The order which has revised its previous norms also bans swimming pools without life guards.
“Whoever contravenes any of the provisions of these rules, shall be imposed with a penalty of Rs 100. If such contravention of rules is repeated by the owner of the swimming pool, the usage of the pool shall be suspended by the Executive Authority immediately on its notice till the violation is rectified”, the GO of July 7 said.
The order has directed field officials to conduct periodic visits and serve show cause notices and if the notice is not attended within seven days from the date of receipt, the authority may order suspension of usage of the swimming pool.
Most of the norms were already there, but the recent amendments will certainly reduce drowning accidents. At the same time, the government’s decision will provide more job opportunities for youngsters to join as life guards in private pools”, said a swimming coach associated with the Sports Development Authority.
