Police issue notice to Kancha Ilaiah, daily
It was for publishing an article titled Devudu Prajasamya Vaadi Kaada
Hyderabad: The Sultan Bazaar police has issued a notice to social scientist Kancha Ilaiah and a regional newspaper’s management and editor after booking a case against them for publishing an article titled Devudu Prajasamya Vaadi Kaada (Is God not a democrat?).
The notice asked them to appear before court following a complaint from VHP leaders. If the respondents do not appear, they can be arrested. Earlier in May, the police had booked a case against them under Sections 153 (A) and 295 (A), for deliberate and malicious acts aiming at offending religious sentiment and for spreading enmity between religious groups. “We have sent a notice asking them to appear before court in this case. If they do not respond, an arrest warrant can be issued,” said inspector P. Shiva Shankar Rao of Sultan Bazaar police station.
The petitioners, VHP activists Pagudakula Balaswamy and Thirupathi Naik, had alleged that Ilaiah had compared Hinduism with Islam and Christianity. They accused that the professor insulted Hindu gods by comparing them to mortals, mocked Hindu worship, and also attempted to trigger clashes between upper and lower castes. The article was published in a Telugu newspaper in May.
