Belagavi: A group of women from Telsang town, near Vijayapura set a bar on fire enraged over the rising number of drunkards and the menace they pose.
After their long-drawn protest for closure of the bar failed to yield results, the women gathered near the bar and resorted to stone-throwing threatening men folk and others who tried to prevent them from getting violent, not to come in their way.
The women staged a protest until late night on Sunday and got violent when the local authorities did not respond to their demands. Some police personnel did arrive at the spot to stop them from indulging in stone-throwing but could not stop them from setting the bar on fire.
A group of protesters carried kerosene bottles, poured it around the bar and set it on fire. The protesters continued to pelt the bar with stones without caring for the police personnel and others who desperately tried to prevent them.
At 9 pm, a large number of police personnel rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control and managed to disperse the protesting women. A police van with several policemen is camping in the town to ensure law and order.
According to protesters, their husbands became alcoholics ever since the bar opened in the town. Most of the families are finding it difficult to lead their lives comfortably with men spending all their earnings on alcohol.
The women also complained that their children are getting vulnerable due to the location of the bad adjacent to their schools. Every evening, drunken men get violent making it difficult for decent people in the town to come out of their homes, they said.
