Infertility on the rise in Tamil Nadu

The infertility rate in TN is higher than in Bihar or Odisha
Chennai: Infertility is on the rise in Tamil Nadu compared to other states in the country. The infertility rate in TN is higher than in Bihar or Odisha as the people here spend more time on work, thus resulting in physiological imbalances and ovulation disorders, claims director of medical education Dr S. Geethalakshmi.
The infertility rate in Tamil Nadu is at 20% while it is lower in states like Bihar and Orissa due to early marriages and lower literacy level, she said while inaugurating Ferticon-2015, the 5th national symposium on fertility and high risk pregnancy organised by the Aakash infertility centre here on Sunday.
“About 70% of the infertility problems are curable while the rest could be managed with interventional procedures,” she said. With the increase in literacy rate people appear to get more ambitious and end up spending more time at work, leading to physiological imbalances and ovulation disorders which cause infertility, Dr Geethalakshmi explained.
The state government’s Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy maternity benefit scheme and free drop-in facility for women after delivery ensures the government is engaged in efforts to reduce infertility problems. About Rs 15,000 per person had been sanctioned for interventional procedures under the Chief Minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme.
Dr Hirishikesh Pai, who introduced numerous path breaking and pioneering techniques in the field of assisted reproductive technology, was presented with the lifetime achievement award on the occasion.
