BCCI buys more time to study the verdict
Rajiv Shukla to constitute a working group which has been given time up to six weeks to study the verdict
Mumbai: The high-profile IPL governing council that was supposed to look into the Supreme Court-appointed three-member Lodha committee and find a way forward has decided to form a “working group” which will study the order and come up with recommendations. The IPL GC authorised IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla to constitute a working group which has been given time up to six weeks to study the verdict. The BCCI said it ‘respects the decisions of the Lodha committee and will abide by it in toto.’
“House has entrusted me with responsibility to make a small group that will take six weeks to submit a report as to how we implement the order and way forward for IPL. How to conduct IPL, how many teams and all stakeholders CAC members, sponsors, broadcasters, state associations, legal experts that report will come to GC and it will go WC which will take decision,” Shukla said.
BCCI chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya skipped the meeting, while Ravi Shastri, Ajay Shirke and Jyotiraditya Scindia attended via vide-conference. Sourav Ganguly too attended the meet. It was understood that many members were against the view of disbanding Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. The council members want to explore the option of BCCI managing the two teams.
“Both teams can be managed by the board and that is an option that needs to be discussed. The problem is in doing one has to be careful that a conflict of interest does not arise,” said a member. There were also suggestions that IPL should be prepared for a 10-team tournament. “If tenders are issued for the two teams, IPL can continue in the same format for two years. In 2011, the IPL had 10 teams and for the next two years the tournament featured nine teams. When the two teams return, one can go back to a 10-team format.”
Shulkla too hinted that the teams wouldn’t be terminated.
