Thiruvananthapuram: One body found, four still missing
Giri's body was fished out at around 1 am amidst rough weather and strong currents
Thiruvananthapuram: The body of one of the five youngsters who went missing in the sea at the Eve’s Beach, Kovalam, on Saturday was fished out the following morning. A joint search operation by Navy, Coast Guard and Coastal Police was still going on while filing this report Sunday evening.
The deceased identified as Anoop Giri, 21, of Ayiroor was a hotel management student of the Lourdes Matha Institute, Kuttichal. His friends Jithin Carmel of Kazhakootam, a student of Marian Engineering College; Nithin Raj of Kallayam, a student of the PA Aziz College; Akhil P Jayan of Statue, a BDS student of the Malabar Medical College, all aged 20, were missing.
The fifth missing person was identified as Abhishek Sasikumar, 33, of PTP Nagar, a basketball coach. Officials said the lifeguards who were present there had warned the youths not to venture into the sea just before they left after their duty at 7 pm.
The youngsters who had gone there as a part of Eid revelry was confirmed missing ten minutes later. A team under Vizhinjam CI Stuart Keeler reached the spot and led a search operation with the help of two boats.
Giri's body was fished out at around 1 am amidst rough weather and strong currents. Navy aircraft and several other boats continued search missions on Sunday morning. There was unusually high number of visitors to the beach on Saturday and many ventured into the water defying warnings, officials said.
A total of around 20 people were washed away from various beaches of Kovalam during the last one year. Kovalam has no proper beach management system.
