Storm brews over travel allowance for Cucek head

Sreejith was formerly the principal of the School of Engineering of Cusat and his last assignment was as director in IHRD, on deputation
KOCHI: A controversy is brewing at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) over an order that was issued to grant money from the Pulinkunnu engineering college fund for the daily travel allowance of its new principal P.S. Sreejith from his home in Aluva to Pulinkunnu. Mr Sreejith said that this was one condition that Cusat authorities needed to fulfill for him to join.
Mr Sreejith was formerly the principal of the School of Engineering of Cusat and his last assignment was as director in IHRD, on deputation. He was picked by the Cusat Syndicate to head the Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK) at Pulinkunnu where the staff are at odds with each other. It was the decision of the syndicate that nobody from the institution would be appointed principal due to the differences between them.
The VC is learnt to have signed the order to use CUCEK funds for Mr Sreejith’s daily travel from Aluva subject to the ratification of the syndicate, which is understood to be a formality.
This is the first time that the principal of the college is being extended such a facility. When contacted, VC Dr J. Letha said that the amount thus spent would only be equivalent to the amount that would have been spent on the principal’s accommodation at Pulinkunnu. “Hence we decided to agree to his demand,” said Dr Letha adding that the decision to appoint Mr Sreejith had been taken to boost the sagging engineering college. “Otherwise it would be difficult to get good hands to work in a rural area like Kuttanad,” she added.
