Sangolli Rayanna statue attack: Alert

Police arrested based on the information provided by a taxi driver

Bengaluru: An alert cab driver helped police to nab a person on Sunday, in connection with damaging the Sangolli Rayanna statue near Sangolli Rayanna circle.

The police said the arrested has been identified as Basudev, 28, a native of Nepal. He had come to the city around nine years ago and was working as a helper in a hotel.

Police said he was arrested based on the information provided by a taxi driver Honnesh. On Saturday, around 5.30 pm, while the driver was crossing the statute in his cab, he noticed a person trying to break the sword from the statue. He immediately alerted the control room and gave police the description of the miscreant who had attempted to steal the sword. The police officer forwarded the number of the cab driver to Cottonpete police station.

The police along with the driver went around Majestic area looking for the accused and found him on a pavement near Lal Bagh. The driver identified the person and during the interrogation the accused confessed to have committed the crime.

A senior police officer said, “It seems like that the arrested person is mentally disturbed, but he accepted that he tried to steal the sword from the statue and sell it as he was in dire need of money. The CCTV footage was obtained, but nothing was visible as it was dark. The police are investigating to find out as to how many people were involved in this incident.”
