Rahul Gandhi to visit Bengaluru to meet farmers on July 23
Bengaluru: In what could be considered a wake-up call for the Congress government grappling with an unprecedented spree of farmers’ suicide, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Bengaluru on July 23 to reportedly acquaint himself with the ground situation in the state.
Congress sources told Deccan Chronicle that Mr Gandhi is expected to spend a night in Bengaluru before leaving for Andhra Pradesh. His visit could buttress criticism by the opposition BJP and JD(S) that Mr Gandhi has time to storm opposition ruled states to take up the farmers’ cause but none to visit Karnataka where the Siddaramaiah government is at a loss to comprehend why the suicides are happening.
Soon after his arrival, Mr Gandhi is expected to meet KPCC president Dr G. Parameshwar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to know the steps taken by the government to prevent suicides. Pressure is mounting on the Congress vice-president to meet families of the deceased farmers too.
