Monsoon may turn out to be deficient in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

An upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal

Hyderabad: After a bountiful June, the Southwest Monsoon could turn out to be deficient in the two Telugu states — Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — in July and August. “The rains which the two states are getting is less than expected and it is going to be a deficient South West monsoon in July and August,” said K. Seetharam, director (forecast), Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad.

One of the reasons is said to be a weather system in the west central Bay of Bengal which has sucked out all moisture, Mr Seetharam said. “There are no systems in the central Bay. The systems are forming only in the northern part of the Bay of Bengal which is why states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are receiving rains,” he said.

An emerging depression on the west coast might impact rains in Gujarat and Rajasthan, but not in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Early on Sunday, the IMD put out a forecast regarding the possibility for a low pressure forming over the Bay of Bengal. The update was pulled down towards the evening. “Predicting the nature of troughs is difficult. Currently, a low pressure is not expected,” Mr. Seetharam said.

A trough of low pressure that runs from Odisha to South Tamil Nadu across coastal Andhra Pradesh persists, according to the IMD. An upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood now lies over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand.

In the last 24 hours, Narsapuram in West Godavari district recorded the maximum rainfall of five cm followed by Itchapuram from Srikakulam at four cm. Mandasa and Palasa mandals in Srikakulam district received three cm rainfall each.

In the Telangana State, Dharmapuri mandal (Karimnagar district), Mancherial and Luxettipet (Adilabad district) recorded the maximum rainfall of four cm each.

Moderate to heavy rainfall will occur at a few places over Telangana and coastal AP over the next few days, the department added.
