Emergency help line number 112 for women's safety by January 2016
Modi government plans to link all emergency services to one central helpline number
New Delhi: By January 2016, citizens may be able to dial a national helpline (112) for immediate police help in crimes against women. The Union home ministry will circulate detailed guidelines to states asking them to link police services to this central emergency response system.
The scheme will initially be launched in five to six states, but gradually the Modi government plans to link all emergency services to one central helpline number. The number was conceptualised after studying 911 in the US, 112 in Britain and Australia, but MHA claims the Indian helpline service will be more technologically advanced than the US.
