Group swindled more than Rs 2 crore promising employment in Chennai Metro Rail Ltd

Chennai: Five people, including a couple, were arrested by Chennai police for allegedly swindling more than Rs 2 crore from job aspirants promising employment in Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. The arrested were identified as S. Paulraj, 54, of Saidapet, A. Mahendran, 51, from Coimbatore, his wife Rajathi, 36, his brother Nagaraj, 56 and Arjun Kumar, 36 from Dindugul.

“We believe that they the gang had certainly made much more than Rs 2 crore as they have cheated more than 100 job aspirants and had been collecting lakh of rupees from each of them. All of them were picked up from a hotel on Arcot Road on Saturday.

Police action came after G. Rajarathinam, General Manager – HR, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd, lodged a complaint at Valsaravakkam police station saying the gang had been giving fake appointment orders to people after collecting huge amounts from them.

Investigators believe that Pualraj was the brain behind the job racket. He used others and his agents to collect money from youths promising job in the Metro Rail. “Not only Metro Rail, he was also cheating people promising them jobs in EB and other agencies. He looks for genuine job advertisements in internet and other publications and starts operating on his own to collect money from the aspirants,” the police said. Police also seized Rs 86,000 cash, a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV and 68 cheques from the suspects. All the suspects were remanded to judicial custody and lodged in prison.
