59 militants killed in raids by Egyptian army in north Sinai

Twenty-five other militants were also killed in the raid

Cairo: At least 59 militants were killed on Sunday in raids by the Egyptian army in different parts of the restive North Sinai.

The army targeted militants' headquarters, killing 20 in Gabal Alika area in Shiekh Zwayied, army spokesperson Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said.

The army also exploded militants' vehicle and killed the militants inside it.

In another raid, four militants, including a dreaded terrorist named 'Ahmed Gamal Salem', were arrested near Um Shehan village in North Sinai, the army spokesperson said.

Twenty-five other militants were also killed in the raid.

The army also targeted three headquarters of militants and killed 14 of them during air raids on different parts of Al-Arish and Shiekh Zwayies cities, Samir added.

North Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since January, 2011 revolution that toppled the ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks targeting police and military personnel increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.

Many security personnel have been reported killed since then.

The military has launched security campaigns in the area.
