Tamil Nadu, Pondy to see more rains in next few days

Chennai: Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will witness a gradual increase in rainfall in the next five days. Widespread rains will also occur over Kerala and south Karnataka until Wednesday. However Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema will be dry without any significant change in weather, officials at the regional meteorological centre here said.

Motorists and commuters were seen taking refuge under grade separators and bridges. Meenambakkam and Chembarrambakkam catchment area also received rainfall till Saturday night.
For fishermen, the weather office said, strong winds from southwesterly direction with speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph is likely along the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. During the period June 1 to mid-July Tiruvallur, Kancheeepuram, Chennai, Salem, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram and Madurai recorded deficit rainfall. Districts of Coimbatore, Theni, Sivagangai and Tuticorin received 20 per cent of excess rainfall during the same period.
“All four tiger reserves in the state located in Nilgiris, Sathyamangalam, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli have started receiving rainfall and we are hoping for more fresh spells of rain for the next few weeks," said a senior forest official adding that dams and reservoirs in reserve forests are dry and are awaiting copious inflow. Dams in Valparai, Sathyama-ngalam, Uppar Bhavani support a storage of less than 40 per cent, the official said.
India meteorological department said an upper air cyclonic circulation was lying over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and extending up to 7.6 kilometres above sea level. Under its influence a low pressure area may form during the next 48 hours making monsoon moderate to strong over the Andaman Sea, IMD's bulletin said.
