Undertrials escape from juvenile home

Police managed to trace one of the 14 undertrial juveniles who escaped from the juvenile home
Chennai: The city police, on Saturday, managed to trace one of the 14 undertrial juveniles who escaped from the juvenile home at Kelly’s in Purasawalkam on Friday night. One of them faces a murder charge.
On Friday, the inmates had tricked and overpowered the night duty warden and escaped from detention. Thirteen of the total 14, who escaped, were involved in theft and other petty cases in Chennai. As many as 43 boys were lodged in the home when the escape happened.
Night duty watchman Vijayakumar, while making the roll call on the first floor of the home, noticed that 14 of the total 23 were missing.
What he failed to notice was that the inmates were hiding near the door. When Vijayakumar opened the door, he was pushed down and 14 of them escaped after locking him in the room with other nine inmates. The incident was later reported to the police.
The police after initial enquiry indicated that the facility needed better security arrangement. Those escaped from the home belonged to places like Korukkupet, Pallavaram, RK Nagar, Saidapet, Elephant Gate, and Ice House.
