On your mark! as Hyderabad prepares for marathon season

Groups in city are helping participants get fit for the various challenges ahead

With the Hyderabad Marathon and Triathlon drawing near, the Hyderabad Runners and the Great Hyderabad Adventure Club are helping participants get in shape with weekly practice events on Necklace Road in the city. This Sunday saw around 200 runners and bicyclists line up at 5 am for a 24 -km run, a 20+5 km duathalon (cycling and running) at 6 am and a short 5 km run at 7 am.

According to Deepam Morporia fromGHAC, the runs are aimed at helping people prepare. “Throughout the route we have aid stations where people can have water or biscuits every 2½ km, to keep themselves hydrated,” he said. Rajesh Vetcha from Hyderabad Runners also assures that it’s not too late to start training.

“Someone who has no existing health issues and has a good overall fitness level can take part in the five km and maybe even train for a 10km,” he said. Hyderabad Marathon Race Director, Dr. Murali Nannapaneni, said they were looking to make this year’s event the biggest ever. “Almost 200 medical personnel will man the route. They trained for two months just for this. We’re also aiming to hire 3,000 volunteers from schools and colleges from the city,” Murali said.
