TTD priests oppose tunnel via 7 hills
Digging tunnel is a violation of Agama sastra principles, say priests
Tirumala: Priests of Lord Venkateswara’s temple in Tirumala strongly opposed the digging of tunnel for laying pipeline from Balaji reservoir for supplying water to Chittoor district and they warned that the move will bring misfortune to the state.
Speaking to the media, the Agama aastra pudits including Srinivasa Deeshitulu expressed serious concern over the decision of digging of proposed water pipeline tunnel through holy seven hills by the state government
Stating that the digging tunnel was in violation of the Aagama sastra principles, he demanded the government to withdraw the decision for the welfare of the people of the state.
It may be noted that the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had decided to dig two tunnels each of 8 km length to supply water to the Chittor district which is the home turf of Mr Naidu to irrigate the arid lands. He had planned to supply Galeru -Nagari waters through Balaji reservoir which is to be constructed near Renigunta as per Galeru-Nagari project. The water would also be supplied to the entire district through pipeline.
For this project, approximately Rs 2,000 crore were allocated from the Budget and tenders were also invited to complete the project. The proposed two tunnels will take its course through Seshachalam forest reserve and will touch the seven hills at some point.
However, the Agama sastra pudits of Tirumala temple said that it was against Agama sastra and it can leave hinder the state progress and welfare of the people if the tunnels were dug through seven hills.
They suggested Mr Naidu to chalk our alternative plan to supply water for farm lands in Chittoor district. "Digging of sacred hills is nothing but digging of their own pits," they opined.
