Telangana districts to be split
State may create 9 more districts, taking total to 19
Hyderabad: The proposal to create new districts in TS is back in focus with the government asking the revenue department to submit a report on how many districts could be created as per the state’s population.
The government is keen to launch the creation of new districts from Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s home district Medak by carving out a new district of Siddipet. The government plans to create nine more new districts initially in addition to the already existing 10.
Soon after assuming office as first Chief Minister of Telangana in June 2014, Mr Rao hinted at the creation of 14 new districts taking the total to 24 districts. However, the plan was put on hold following reports of possible reorganisation of Parliam-ent and Assembly constituencies by the Elec-tion Commission. But the poll panel later indicated that there were no chances of reorganising the constituencies in the near future.
With this, the TRS government has once again activated the proposal to create new districts. These proposals got a fresh lease of life recently after Mr Rao himself made an announcement at Siddi-pet on July 4 during the Haritha Haaram programme that the government would make Siddipet a district soon.
In this backdrop, the revenue department has initiated the exercise for the creation of new districts from existing ones. Official sources in the state revenue department estimate that 18 new districts could be created in Telangana going by the current population of 3.5 crore.
