Crescent moon brings joy across Hyderabad

The crescent has also been sighted in Bengaluru and Chennai

Hyderabad: The Central Ruiyat-e-Hilal Committee-Hyderabad Deccan, the moon sighting committee, announced the sighting of the crescent of the holy Shavval on Friday evening.

The resonating sound of sirens across the mosques in Hyderabad brought joy to the Muslim community as it meant that Id-ul-Fitr would be celebrated across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

A team of noted Islamic scholars, under the aegis of the moon sighting committee, met at the Hussaini Building at Moazzam Jahi Market on Friday evening and made the announcement after getting confirmation from Guntur, Vijayawada and Warangal. The crescent has also been sighted in Bengaluru and Chennai.

Earlier in the day, confusion had prevailed on Facebook and Twitter with locals being flooded with “Id Mubarak” messages.

The meeting was attended by secretary general of Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Deccan, Moulana Syed Qubul Pasha Shuttari, vice-chancellor of Jamia Nizamia, Mufti Khaleel Ahmed, dean of Darul Ifta, Mufti Azeemuddin, Moulana Kazim Pasha Quadri, Syed Aulia Hussaini and other religious scholars.
