Chennai gets welcome showers
Chennai: After a week long surge in temperature, Chennai experienced a moderate rainfall of nearly 7.0 mm on Friday. The meteorological department said the downpour, mainly in Western and Central Chennai, was ‘convectional rainfall.’ According to Met department, rain started in the afternoon and is likely to continue throughout the night. Despite rain, the maximum temperature was 39.6 degree C and minimum 28.4 degree C. Humidity was nearly 76% till 8:30 pm at Nungambakkam.
The officials said around 3 p.m. rainfall of about 1.0 mm started. By 7: 30 pm it increased to around 7.0 mm. If rain continues, the temperature may drop. But the sea breeze in the late evening may lead to rise in temperature resulting in hot weather. This may continue tomorrow as well. Till July 20, isolated light rain may occur. Thereafter, there may be scattered rain. Dr.S.R. Ramanan, Director of Met, said it was a convectional rainfall. There is a possibility of thunderstorm in one or two parts of Chennai.
Complaint cell: Chennai Corporation’s ‘1913’ complaint cell has received more than 30 rain-related complaints since late afternoon on Friday. While most of the complaints were related to power cuts and problem with the EB box in their area, complaints regarding water stagnation and damaged roads were
comparatively less.
Sources said of the total complaints, more than 20 related to power cuts and sparks from EB junction boxes, especially from North Chennai. Less than 10 complaints were related to water stagnation and battered roads.
