Chennai Corporation studying ‘bicycle sharing’ system

10 places will be chosen in the first phase to connect various places in the city

Chennai: As part of the efforts to implement a non-motorised transport policy, Chennai corporation is currently involved in studying the ‘bicycle sharing ‘ system. As many as 10 places will be chosen in the first phase to connect various places in the city including a few neighbourhood areas, officials say. The system will allow the public to use bicycle from point ‘A’ and return it at point ‘B’ either for free or at a very minimal rate, to encourage cycling as a mode of transport.

When contacted, officials said, “The feasibility study about implementation of the system was done and the local body is in the second stage of study that identifies the possible bicycle points.” In addition to markets, malls, arterial roads, important junctions, landmarks, metro rail and EMU stations were chosen. Plans are on to include some neighbourhood areas in the bicycle points to encourage public to actively participate in the system.Initially, 10 places will be chosen as ‘bicycle points’ on an experimental basis.
