Chandrababu Naidu's camp office becomes protest site
Strong contingent of policemen was deployed to stop the protesters from reaching the camp office on Friday
VIJAYAWADA: The strike by the municipal workers is becoming intense by the day as the government seems not to be concerned about the issue. The municipal workers who are protesting for over a week now, took out a rally from Tummalapalli Kala Kshetram and staged a Dharna at the Chief Minister’s camp office on Friday.
The protesters were confronted by the police officials who resorted to lathi charge. Many protesters were arrested.
It must be recalled that the municipal workers launched an indefinite strike on July 9 demanding hike in their wages. Following this, the streets of Guntur, Vijayawada
and Visakhapatnam turned into dumping yards.
Meanwhile, a strong contingent of policemen was deployed to stop the protesters from reaching the camp office on Friday. However, the workers managed to reach the camp office and raised slogans against the government.
The situation turned out of control when supporters from all 13 districts participated in the strike and tried to block the Chief Minister’s camp office. Police officials obstructed the workers with lathi charge and arrested the agitators and later shifted them to different police stations in the city.
“Over 400 protesters were arrested and shifted to various police stations in the city,” said president of the employees’ union Asula Ranganayakulu.
