Workers strike hits sanitation in Andhra Pradesh
Striking workers obstruct regular staff from removing garbage
Nellore: In the absence of any move by municipal authorities to remove the garbage piling up in every division, all the areas in Nellore have been stinking. The Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) hardly taken any steps to maintain sanitary conditions after the 877 temporary sanitary workers went on indefinite strike demanding hike in salaries from last Friday.
The 350 regular sanitary workers are unable to handle the situation that is going out of control in city on every passing day. With no one to clear the blocks in the open drainage canals, drainage water was overflowing in several areas causing innumerable problems to the pedestrians. Worst hit are the people living in old town areas such as Santhapeta, Chinna Bazaar, Pedda Bazaar, Bridavanam, Stonehousepeta, Usman Saheb Peta, Balaji Nagar and Haranathapuram among several others.
In a bid to bring pressure on the government, the striking workers have been obstructing the regular staff from removing the garbage. Though some corporators have tried to hire workers to clear the garbage in their divisions, those on strike have been staging dharnas and even filing false cases against both the corporators and the workers.
A senior sanitary inspector Nageswar Rao said that they are managing the situation with available staff and concentrating on the areas where Muslim minorities are living in view of ensuing Ramzan festival.
Nellore mayor Md Abdul Azeez said that they are taking the help of police to carryout the sanitation because of trouble being created by temporary workers. He said that they would hire outsiders in next two days to make the city free from garbage.
