Visakhapatnam: Finally, Vizagites got some relief from the garbage mess, as private workers under police protection have started clearing the garbage in view of the strike by the municipal sanitary workers.
The GVMC officials approached the city police for security of the private workers who were attacked by the striking municipal workers at various places in the city while clearing the garbage on Wednesday. On the other hand, there is no end in sight to municipal workers’ strike on the seventh day on Thursday as the government did not invite them for talks.
Due to the indefinite strike by the municipal workers to press their demands, tonnes of garbage continued to pile up in different localities in Vizag, particularly at big markets, rythu bazaars and also open places. With the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation’s Swachh Bharat call to clear the garbage yielding a poor response from Vizagites and the striking workers obstructing the works being carried out by private workers in many places, secretary of municipal administration and urban development department directed the police chiefs and district collectors to provide protection to the private workers for ensuring sanitation and water supply.
Speaking to this correspondent, GVMC commissioner Pravin Kumar said that they have formed special teams in each zone so that ward-wise sanitation can be taken up. “We have more than 20 JCBS and 49 tippers working on rotation and around 150 private workers were engaged in the sanitation drive. On Thursday the private workers cleared around 850 tonnes of garbage and night sanitation will start and the drive will continue till the municipal workers call off their strike,” he said.
The GVMC chief also said that bleaching powder was sprayed at all the bin points and videographers engaged to prevent any assault on the private workers and drivers. Fogging will be taken up from Friday morning and the GVMC has prepared to mitigate the situation, he added.
City generates about 700 tonnes of waste in a day and over 3,500 tonnes of garbage on the roads and the city stinks with the garbage. In One-Town, the Telugu Desam leaders and activists led by Visakha South MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar, along with some local people, cleared the garbage.
