Land Bill: Supreme Court nudges Centre

The bench granted four weeks for the Union government to file its response

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the Centre, on a batch of petitions filed by farmers associations, challenging the re-promulgation of the land ordinance on May 30, merely because the government could not muster enough support in the Rajya Sabha for passing the earlier Bill in the Budget session.

A bench headed by Justice J.S. Khehar issued notice after hearing senior counsel Indira Jaising, appearing for Delhi Grameen Samaj, Bharatiya Kishan Union and two others challenging the validity of the ordinance. The bench granted four weeks for the Union government to file its response.
